Protecting the administration area of your Joomla site with password Print

We recommend to protect your Joomla administrator folder with an http password which will cut short unwanted hacking-attempts and the related extra-traffic.

To do that, login into our VirtualMin hosting panel, then:
  1. Select domain to protect in drop-down
  2. Click Services menu, "Protected Directories" submenu
  3. Click "Add protection for a new directory." link
  4. Select radio "Sub-directory", and enter "/administrator" as subdirectory and any text to display like "Private area" in "Authentication realm"
  5. Click "Save" button.
  6. Click "Edit Users" main menu, click a user to give access to,
  7. Open "Other user permissions" accordion-tab
  8. And in "Allow access to web directories" select the directory in "All directories" and click the right-arrow button to move it into "Allowed directories".
  9. Save user and repeat for any other user to give individual access. Their login username is the one displayed in "IMAP / POP3 / FTP login", and same password than for mail and other things

Consider adding https access to have encrypted access to your server, avoiding passwords transmitted in clear-text.
